Kindle Price Drop Due to iPad Computer

When the Amazon Kindle was first introduced in late 2007, it retailed for $399, which is quite close to what a low-end iPad computer sells for now. The fact that a solid but rather featureless e-reader in 2007 would cost almost as much as an app-heavy tablet computer in 2010 is pretty remarkable.

Nevertheless, the original Kindle sold out within 6 hours of its debut. When the iPad was first introduced, Kindle prices dropped to $189, even though it was an upgraded model with more storage, a better battery and sharper screen. But looking at the Kindle's plunge in price over the last three years, it's possible to conclude that Amazon may end up giving it away for free by the end of this year. If you plot four Kindle price points on a graph and connect a trend-line, that is the picture it gives you.
